Arise!!!

Watch the video
Planned Parenthood organized a National Day of Solidarity for the women of South Dakota. As you may know, South Dakota recently passed a law making all abortions a crime. Groups in thirty seven states protested during this nation wide event.

When I arrived at the Statehouse, I saw news crews crawling all over the place. The sad thing is, they were there for a death penalty case. The news people just sat in their AV trucks and watched us with disinterest. One reporter, Carol Luper from WSYX-TV, asked us if we had sent out press releases. "Yes. Releases werre sent to ALL the media, all over the country."

She was livid! She ranted that her news editor never even told her about our event!

Carol reported the story and got the scoop. In addition, a lone AP photographer took some pictures.

But the other news channels chose not to cover the event, and not a word was written in our local paper, The Columbus Dispatch.

If you look at the video, it's obvious that this is news, especially when one realizes that it was going on in thirty seven states. Why did the media ignore us? I mean, we are talking about the big bomb issue that is going to the Supreme Court. We are talking about the one polarizing issue behind the Religious Rights agenda, and the one great desire of Bush's "base."

We are talking about the forefront issue that is being used to whittle away at Women's Rights. Why the H@ll is it that NO ONE CARES????

The women's rights movement in the U.S., that began with the suffragettes in 1898, and progressed to the women's liberation movement of the 1970's is under siege. The Patriarchy is in position to send women back to the Victorian age, and they are on the verge of doing it. If the media will not report on the issue, then we need to do it ourselves. Put on your battle gear Girls... It's Time to ARISE!!!!!

Holy shit! THIS is what you were talking about! When I clicked on your link the other day all I got was the picture of you.

I just got in here this morning and lo and behold there was a story. I thought I was crazy and Dubhe was reading over my shoulder and says "So THAT'S what was going on!! The other day when I clicked on the link at work I just got the picture!"

Damn, damn, damn and double damn. I had no clue what was going on and here I missed it entirely.

Now I see why you were dissapointed in me. I swear, there was absolutely no words beneath the picture the other day.

Is there another scheduled anytime soon? If so, I'll be there with bells on.

I just reread this and realized I hadn't gotten anything from Planned Parenthood on this. Then, I realized that I joined Planned Parenthood before I started The Den and the newletters are going to a now defunct address.

What a horrible run of bad luck. How in the hell could I miss this event? And here this was the EXACT same thing I was waiting for to get out there and scream and I missed it.

Now I'm eaten up with guilt and anger. I had no earthly idea it was even going on, I didn't see it on the news, I didn't see it in the blogosphere, the first time I had any inkling about the entire thing was this morning.

I did see the picture but there wasn't anything beneath it, all the text was gone on my end and I remember scratching my head and thinking...'Hmmm, wonder what she meant when she put in the link on my site', then, I completely dimissed it.

I'm off to check that defunct email addy and update my address to the Planned Parenthood folks.

Aaahh, that explains it.

I was beginning to think all the feminists in this country were just ambivilant.

Thanks.

I feel much better now.

P.S.
Even though the Dispatch did not cover the protest, there were two articles in this mornings paper about the bills in our legislature regarding the moring after pill.

Well, imagine that, I accessed the old email account and there was the Planned Parenthood newsletter outlining the event. *sigh*

Well, now it's fixed, all of my feminist related emails and newsletters are going to the appropriate place.

In any case, now that I'm hooked up and have everything pointing in the right direction I'll know when something important is going on and I'll be there! I suspect that there will be lots of these rallies before it's all said and done.

Bummer though, I would have loved to have seen you in your suit of armor *grin*

I just checked out all the websites I can find and I haven't seen anything relating to the Morning after pill?

Damn, I HATE that there is no coverage on this. I just perused NARAL and Planned Parenthood and can't find any proposals in Ohio on the Morning after pill. Do you have a link?

In the meantime I'll check out The Dispatches site and see if I can find something out. I may have to run and pick up the paper.

I found it, damn, damn, damn. Looks like Ohio has lost its status as a 'swing state'. Are any protests planned for this? When does it come to vote?

Planned Parenthood is planning a big rally on the Statehouse lawn when the bill comes up. They will send out e-mails to notify everyone. (I think I know the date, but I dont want to post it if Im wrong.)

P.S.

Therre was an article in the Dispatch this morning about the bill, and I e-mailed the writer, asking her why they did not cover the protest. If she writes back, I will post a follow up.

I am not sure if you heard senator Napoli from SD, where he gives the scenario of who would be able to have an abortion. You must be a white virgin religous (nun?) who is savagely mutilated, sodomized etc. and then you may be eligible (?what board decides?). So I guess middleage latino jews are out. No sodomy, no way. Where do these warped people come from. They are thinly disguised racists. Do they really represent the population?? The film clip is at www.dailymotion.com/video/65838 . Crap even Bush is finally distancing himself from the fundamentalist radicals. GO GIRLS!!

Kelley- Thanks for pointing out this gross misuse of our media in Columbus. In most cases, I think the media is chicken, cowering from the constant onslaught of right wing propaganda. And in some cases, as with the Dispatch, I think it's intentional compliance with that agenda.

I love the photo! Go Joan!

Kelley,
One of the reason's the news media won't cover our Pro-Choice events is because they are owned and run by rich white conservative corporate men, Bush's base. It will take something BIG to get their attention, unfortunately the media is hungry for violence and mayhem. I have been organizing a Pro-Choice group in Lenawee County MI and I've talked to reporters in both of our local papers, neither of them have called me back to cover the new support group for Pro-Choice. I did what I felt I had to do, I place a WANTED advertisement in the classified section and designed a flier to post at the local Grocery, ACO and any other store that has a bulletin board. We have got to get Pro-Choice out of the closet and with safety in numbers too large to ignore Scream from the Highest mountain, "We Will NOT Be IGNORED!" I urge Everyone of us to keep fighting, we are growing in numbers and we MUST keep the ball rolling!

I missed it too. I wish I would of known. Is there anyway I can be told about stuff like this in the future so I can get out there and support it too.
