Heartwarming Humor and Small Town Charm

Standing in the rainbow is a wonderful book by Fannie Flagg, auther of Fried Green Tomatoes at the whistle stop cafe.

It is a sweet little yarn that captures the charm of small town life. A well wriiten book, with nothing controversial at all.

Its curl up in a blanket, feel good reading.

But wait!!!

Alabama Bill Targets 'Gay' Books MONTGOMERY, Ala., April 26, 2005
Republican Alabama lawmaker Gerald Allen says homosexuality is an unacceptable lifestyle. As CBS News Correspondent Mark Strassmann reports, under his bill, public school libraries could no longer buy new copies of plays or books by gay authors, or about gay characters."I don't look at it as censorship," says State Representative Gerald Allen. "I look at it as protecting the hearts and souls and minds of our children."Books by any gay author would have to go: Tennessee Williams, Truman Capote and Gore Vidal. Alice Walker's novel "The Color Purple" has lesbian characters.Allen originally wanted to ban even some Shakespeare. After criticism, he narrowed his bill to exempt the classics, although he still can't define what a classic is. Also exempted now Alabama's public and college libraries.

So if he gets his way, the following authors would be banned(partial list):
Hans Christian Anderson
Horatio Alger
Edward Albee
Sir Francis Bacon
Herman Melville
Langston Hughes
Malcom Forbes
Noel Coward
Willa Cather
Alan Gingsburg
Virginia Woolf
James Barrie
Truman Capote

The Compact Discs of the following composers would have to be destroyed:
Tchaikovsky (no more Nutcracker Suite at Christmas)
Leonard Bernstein (no more "West Side Story", etc.)
Beethoven

How many movies will they destroy that contain gay actors...Why don't they just burn down the whole library?

So waddya say folks...shall we smite this trend of religious politics now, or let them destroy everything beautiful in the world before we fight back? Posted by Hello

I know I live in a glass house and shouldn't throw stones and yet I wonder what is happening to our neighbours. Getting kicked out of church for being Democrats (I thought voting your conscience was a right that U.S. and allied soldiers sacrificed their lives for?). Banning books by gays, yikes what is next Big Brother. Dissent is not allowed! This is the bastion of democracy that goes around the world saying how great it is that they have spawned all these democratic revolutions and the U.S. itself is creating a theocratic state that does not allow any rational discussion, that keeps prisoners extraterritorially so that they are not bound by U.S. or international law. That is not the type of democracy that I want. I don't want to throw out the baby with the bath water, I realize that "W" has less then 50% support and was appointed to his first term by the Supreme Court and rode a wave of patriotism to the second because of the aftermath of September 11th (a wave of 50% or less)so where is the unified opposition? It may be easier for me to see from the outside but I am really worried that the U.S. is losing it. Instead of leading by example the U.S. is coercing its' citizens and the rest of the world. You are too great a nation to go down this treacherous road. Sorry, I feel better now, I just hate to see greatness squandered. There was a great film on gays called "The Struggle To Be Male" that was aired on PBS 10 or 15 years ago that was really good and explained a lot of things. I am wondering if the political climate is preventing it from being shown any more?
